"One Day With Lee"

One Day With Lee

“Lee Konitz once expressed his admiration for how Louis Armstrong, just in playing the melody of a tune, could get “so deep into every single note. Every note is an expression of feeling.” That is what I feel about Konitz’s playing on this album. There are no throw-away notes; nothing is merely a way to get to something else, or to fill up space when new ideas fail to come. In this he follows the dictates of his early mentor, the pianist Lennie Tristano, who viewed jazz improvisation as the creation of something new every time out, even when playing a tune one has played thousands of times before. Lee Konitz was 73 when this recording was made, but his playing here is timeless.”
